My roots in Bluegrass Music date back to my childhood when my Grandpa and his friends would “pick” on Saturday nights on his back porch. He played the mandolin and fiddle but it was the banjo player that captured my attention and imagination. I forget his name, but he taught me the rolls and a little of “Cripple Creek” and then I became more interested in ball, girls and cars and put the banjo down. Working a rotating shift and not having the same days off every week while with the Patrol, prevented me from pursuing my passion of the banjo. Shortly after I retired, I heard Steve Dilling play his banjo in Oakboro during a IIIrd Tyme Out show and that was all it took. I sought the services of Ronnie Hatley who has helped me develop and learn the banjo. It is to both of these gentlemen I owe a debt of gratitude. I consider them both my friends and they both play the banjo the right way.
I teach “Scruggs Style” or 3 finger picking and utilize Tablature. Since I am retired, my schedule is as flexible as you need it to be in order for you to learn. If you elect to take lessons from me, my only rule (s) are that you come expecting to have fun and to learn. Lessons are structured for 45 minutes but you will not leave until you have a clear understanding of what you are trying to learn and can demonstrate to me that you are able to read it and exicute it. Now that you know who I am and where I am, the decision is up to you and your first step is to get in touch with me. I am ready to teach when you are ready to learn. Progress starts when you do!!
